LUCERNE (Medicago Sativa)

Lucerne belongs to the Pulse family.
The average annual temperature for lucerne production is around 15ºC. The optimum temperature rank, depending on lucerne varieties, is between 18 and 28ºC.

Irrigation handling in lucerne crops is of vital importance, as lucerne is sensitive to flooding due to root asphyxiation. Sprinkling irrigation in lucerne crop, as the shadow percentage from leaves is of 100%, hardly differs from other irrigation systems talking about efficiency, as with this irrigation system, water application speed is slower, avoiding this way floods.

Sprinkling irrigation in lucerne is similar to the same natural rain talking about application conditions. Sprinkling irrigation in lucerne crops shows lots of advantages, such as: the washing of leaves" surface through the irrigation, improving this way lucerne plants" efficiency, sprinkling irrigation also helps to fight against frosts as well as to reduce the temperature of the plants, to fight against pests simply with the application of irrigation and also by adding to the water from the sprinkling system the phytosanitaries that the crop demands.

Sprinkling irrigation systems show lots of advantages against other irrigation systems, such as the durability and reliability, maintenance simplicity, independence on specialized manpower, easiness to storage, cost/ha of sprinkling irrigation, residual sale value and so on.

The limiting factor in lucerne crop is the acidity. The optimum pH of the ground for its cultivation is of 7.2, and we must lime when the pH level is below 6.8. Lucerne is very sensitive to salinity and it demands deep and well drained soils.
