CORN (Zea mays)

Corn belongs to the gramineous family. For better efficiency in corn crops, temperatures must be between 8 ºC (minimum temperature) and 30ºC (maximum temperature).
Corn is one of the most demanding crops talking about water, so the choice of the irrigation system is of vital importance.

Sprinkling irrigation in corn crops is similar to the natural rain if we talk about application conditions. A sprinkling irrigation system in corn shows many advantages, as the following ones: the cleaning of the surface of the leaves through irrigation improving this way corn plants" efficiency, sprinkling irrigation in corn helps us also to fight against frosts as well as to reduce corn plants" temperature, fight against pests simply by the application of irrigation and even, by adding to the irrigation water from pesticides to foliar fertilizers.

Sprinkling irrigation in corn crops, as the shadow percentage from leaves is of 100%, hardly differs from other irrigation systems talking about efficiency, as with a sprinkling irrigation system we have lots of advantages against other irrigation systems, such as the durability and reliability, maintenance simplicity, independence on specialized manpower, easiness to storage, cost/ha of sprinkling irrigation, residual sale value and so on.

Due to the above mentioned reasons, sprinkling irrigation system is the most installed for corn irrigation all over the world.
Maximum efficiency in corn crops is achieved in those soils with Ph levels between 6 and 7, deep, rich in organic material and with a good drainage.

Before sowing corn, the surface is ploughed with a harrow and depending on ground conditions, a mouldboard ploughing may also be needed before the sowing. The sowing is done at a depth of approximately 5 cm. The sowing frame for corn crops is generally 0.8-1 m x 20-25 cm
Corn demands weak fertilising in the first steps of crop development and later, rich fertilising in P and K with a bigger percentage in N during the vegetative growing period of corn.
