SUGAR BEET (Beta vulgaris)

Sugar beet belongs to the Quenopodiaceae family.
Sugar beet is a plant from warm climate, sunny and wet and when these conditions appear, the sugar percentage from sugar beet increases. In sugar beet lighting has a direct influence on sugar production.

Water is the most influential factor on the sugar beet weight and sugar percentage, so the irrigation system election to be used is of vital importance. Generally the application of irrigation through sprinkling irrigation is recommended. Sprinkling in sugar beet is similar, talking about application conditions, to the natural rain. A sprinkling irrigation system in sugar beet also shows many advantages, such as the following ones: the washing of leaves' surface through irrigation, improving this way sugar beet plants' efficiency, sprinkling irrigation in sugar beet allows to fight against frosts and also to reduce the temperature of sugar beet plants, to fight against pests with the application of irrigation or even by adding to the water used in sprinkling irrigation from pesticides to foliar fertilizers.

Sprinkling irrigation in a sugar beet crop shows many advantages against other irrigation systems, such as the durability, fiability, maintenance facility, independence on specialized manpower, easiness to storage, cost/ha of sprinkling irrigation, residual sale value, and so on.

For these reasons, sprinkling irrigation with coverage set systems is normally the most used system in sugar beet irrigation.
Sugar beet demands deep soils, with pH levels around 7, with a high capacity of water retention and good ventilation.
