Applications / Horticulture crops / Onion

ONION (Allium cepa)

Onion belongs to the Liliaceae family.
Onion crops demand warm climate and basic soils, of medium consistency, loose and rich in organic material.

Onion is very sensitive to an excess of humidity, as heavy changes can make bulbs crack. Best productions in onion crops are achieved in those soils with pH levels between 6 and 6.5.

Onion does not bear an excess of humidity, so the application of sprinkling irrigation is recommended, as with this system, the speed of water application is generally slower, avoiding this way the appearance of floods. Sprinkling irrigation in onion crops is similar to the same natural rain if we talk about application conditions. A sprinkling irrigation system in onion shows different advantages, such as: the possibility to wash the surface of leaves through irrigation, improving this way the efficiency of onion plants. It also allows us to fight against frosts and to reduce the temperature of onion plants, to fight against pests simply by the application of irrigation or even by adding to the irrigation water the phitosanitaries that the crop demands.

A sprinkling irrigation system shows many advantages against other irrigation systems, such as the durability and efficiency, easiness to maintain, independence on specialized manpower, facility to storage, cost/ha of sprinkling irrigation, residual sale value and so on.
